So I will fiddling around with settings on my computer, and managed to find away to push extra power into the wireless adapter (I hope it’s ok…) to increase the range a tiny tiny bit. And… it seems to have worked! A tiny phantom of a signal that I was receiving in my room before is now viable — although just barely — and I’m not able to leach the internet connection that on-and-off appears in my hallway! I’ve been catching up on emails all night as well as testing the connection. At my desk, it’s not so great… I can listen to low-bandwidth internet radio and do light instant messaging, but web browsing is slow, and if I open Skype the connection dies. Likewise if I try to download something larger than a few k, the connection chokes and dies. My plan is to load up a big download like a torrent and walk around my house until I find the best location for my little net cloud, and plan my tablet there.

This is the only time I think I could ever wish that I had an external instead of internal wireless adapter — I’d be so willing to rig up a cantenna at this point, but I’m not going to crack open my tablet’s casing.

That’s it for now, I just wanted to rejoice a bit. Now I’m going to go web hunting.

Well I’ve been here for a little over a month now, and I’ve been in Takefu for almost a month. I’m still waiting for my internet connect, but I think if I don’t write this now there won’t be much point to writing it, so I’m writing it here in my room and I will go out and post from the internet connection outside later. I’m posting this from my cellphone… I just set it up today so I don’t know how well it will work… Anyway it’s raining so I can’t go outside and find a wireless spot. Besides, posting from a tablet PC is about as fast and fun as — well — posting from a Japanese cellphone. No T9 either… Oy.

I’m still waiting for my DSL modem to arrive.

In the meantime, classes are good. Vacation was awesome too. I’ll write details and post photos when I can finally do it from my room, or when I can find a wifi spot stable enough to sit down and use a keyboard.

In the meantime, thanks for reading and for posting all the comments! It’ll have to be like this for a little while longer, but I promise I’ll write an awesome post full of pictures as soon as I get net access.

I just wanted to write a quick post to say that I’m still here, and still plan on writing more. I’ve been super busy this week acclimating to my new job, and I’ve been making a few mistakes so I’m trying to spend more time preparing rather than writing. In any case, I don’t have net access in my house yet, so I’m still going to other places to check my email, and that makes it slightly less than ideal to post here regularly too.

So bear with me for a few more days. At the very least, I should be able to write something interesting this weekend… and soon after that I should be able to get internet in my home and write regularly again (or at least have more time to come out to the dirty hall here and type on the floor…)
